On Saturday 29 April our men’s teams played against Horton Kirby and we enjoyed the best win against our visitors for a number of years. We won on 3 rinks, drew on 1 rink and lost by only 1 point on the fifth rink. Pete Ward, Men’s Captain, told Website News that “We kept our noses in front on three rinks and kept the pressure on the other two. Scores were Bexleyheath & Barnehurst 94, Horton Kirby 73.
Pete Preston our new men’s Vice-Captain told Website News, that as his journey as Vice-Captain continues, he is gradually putting names to faces. He added that after a rocky start, we are managing to achieve far better results and was pleased that we overcame Horton Kirby in a well-contested game. We had a very successful open day on Monday 1 May with a number of new people joining our bowls club. Pete reflected on the often-quoted saying: “The club that plays together stays together” and he believes our bowls club certainly does this both on and off the green.
On 3 May we entertained Woodcroft men’s which is always a very challenging fixture. On the day our team members played exceptionally well individually and as teams. Overall, Bexleyheath & Barnehurst team on the day scored 58 and Woodcroft scored 57.
Also, on 3 May our ladies played their first match of the season against Sidcup Ladies and won on both rinks. Joan Ward, Ladies Captain, told Website News, “All the ladies played well on a Sidcup green that was quite challenging and with protective mats in place adding to the difficulty. Although there was a chilly wind blowing, we were able to sit outside after the game, in the sunshine in the shelter of the clubhouse for tea and biscuits. All in all, a very enjoyable afternoon spent with a very friendly opposing team”.
On the 4 May, playing a mixed game against Pleasaunce we played with a good competitive spirit, winning on 4 rinks and only losing by 1 point on the fifth rink, overall, the scores were Bexleyheath & Barnehurst 97, with Pleasaunce scoring 63.
