Bexleyheath & Barnehurst Bowls Website News 30 May

Bexleyheath, Sunday 28 May 2023, wall-to-wall sunshine with a welcome breeze; perfect conditions for bowling.

Our visitors, Belvedere Social Bowls Club who so often are a skilful and tough opponent. A number of our regular players were missing mainly through illness and other players were brought in the preceding 24 hours or so with some resultant changes to each of the five teams playing.

Over the course of the match, there was fine bowling from players of both clubs along with the luck that forms part of the game of lawn bowls; a very entertaining afternoon in the glorious sunshine with many of those members watching staying after the match to talk and enjoy the company of the others. A number of Belvedere players also stayed after the match, resulting in a pleasant hour or so putting the world to right.

It was a close competitive match with B&B winning three of the five Triples games with the overall scoring 88- 74 in B&Bs’ favour; a great bowls match to watch.

Earlier in the morning Lesley Fletcher and John Digges had their mixed pairs match against Sidcup in this Bexley Boroughs Competition. This was a keenly fought match which saw Lesley and John just 7-5 ahead after 10 ends. The Sidcup pair fought back winning 15th, 16th, 18th and 19th ends with a four). The B&B pair kept their heads grabbing the upper hand towards the end of this 21 ends match winning 15-18, they are now in the next round.

Monday 29 May, 1730 hrs with a number of supporters from B&B watching our Over 55s Men’s Team in the Final against VCD Bowls Club which took place on neutral ground at Empire Bowls Club. Our four men (Roy Loft, Pete Ward, Ken Lapper and John Digges) were undoubtedly feeling the pressure of the moment just before the match began. Website News was amongst the supporters and watched in anticipation and knowing the strength and experience of the four from VCD.

As probably expected, VCD got off to a good start winning 3-0 at the close of the 2nd end. At the right moment, B&B pulled back to 3-2 by the 3rd end. Then VCD scored a 6 making the score 9-2 and it seemed that an onslaught was about to happen. Then our four started to bowl with more confidence and focus winning the next seven ends taking the score to a very impressive 9-11 in B&B’s favour.

VCD fought back although the score at fifteen ends was 14-14, they squeezed a couple of very good shots in the final two ends winning 20-14.

The B&B team fully deserved to be so very close, VCD did say that this was the toughest match they had in the competition. Our four each gave 100%, were not fazed by the occasion, were a true team (Together Everyone Achieves More), no one could have expected a better performance; they did themselves and our bowls club proud.
