Another lawn bowls season came to a close at the end of September. From a number of perspectives it was a good season for Bexleyheath and Barnehurst Bowls Club.

The Ladies team performed really well in the North Kent Triples League finishing a strong second in Division 4 and made good progress in the Gladys Tyler Cup competition in the NW Kent Triples League, beating Woodcroft (who were in Division 3) before losing in the second round against Orpington Excelsior who played in and became Champions of Division 2. The ladies also performed well in their league matches, Captain Joan Ward praised the ladies for the determination, performance and team harmony.

Furthermore, the ladies did very well in the Dartford and District Triples competition where Emma Muscat, Janet Baker and Joan Ward unfortunately lost in the final playing against Empire Bowls Club.

The Men’s Team had mixed fortunes during the season often putting up strong competition yet losing, sometimes very closely. The Men had two teams in the North West Kent Triples League. The team captained by Pete Ward finished a strong third in Division 7. The other team captained by Alan Fletcher had a difficult season against really strong competition, however they played well in some games much to the surprise of many.

Individuals, along with various teams, entered a number of competitions and did rather well, particularly Geoff Plume who lost in the Champions of Champions final. Pete Ward, Roy Loft, John Digges and Hamish McGregor played in a rinks competition (Kent
County Competition) and won through to the Divisional Quarter Final. Additionally, a triples team (comprising of Pete Ward, John Digges and Roy Loft) participated in the Kent County Competition, making it through to the Divisional Final, losing to VCD. In the Dartford & District Mixed Pairs Competition Pete and Joan Ward were beaten in the semi-final by the eventual winners of the competition.

Finally, a team was entered into the George Parker Cup competition with a team of four playing at home (Janet Baker, Marion Bunclark, Don Mackglew and John Digges) whilst the other team of four played away (Lesley Fletcher, Jean Aird, Alan Fletcher and Geoff Plume) at the same time. Overcoming competition from Horton Kirby led to the same players playing a couple of weeks later in the semi-final against Swanley which was a very close match that Swanley very narrowly won.

On Saturday 10 September we held our Finals Day of our internal competitions which took place in perfect weather just after the scorching heat of July and August. As two players were scheduled to play in three matches a couple of matches took place on Friday 9 September. Before play had begun several members came to give their support and as the day wore on it was good to see many members watching and supporting those playing. When play finished many stayed at the club enjoying a social, congratulating the winners and showing their support generally. A great day was had by
all.

The winners and runners-up were appropriately given fully deserved recognition at our Presentation Night which was held at our Clubhouse on Saturday 26 November 2022.
